Job Evaluation Update
TO ALL UNISON MEMBERS IN EDINBURGH COLLEGE
Following from our members meetings at various
campuses this week where you outlined to us your
concerns about the evaluation exercise and gave
both the college based representatives and the branch
office a clear mandate to progress discussions with
college management.
At those discussions yesterday we clearly communicated
the level of anxiety, dissatisfaction and suspicion
that our members are feeling presently. This was
acknowledged by your management and we were reassured
that everything will be done to prevent such uncertainty
in future.
The primary headline from yesterday’s meeting
is that there is agreement that each of the 200
odd support staff posts should and will have a current
and accurate job description created or confirmed.
This will be done in full consultation with post-holders
and will involve a dialogue/discussion/interview
to ensure that the complexities and nuances of each
role is captured before evaluation is carried out.
The eventual process for that evaluation is subject
to ongoing discussions.
Whatever the outcome of those discussions we should
proceed with the process of capturing current and
accurate job descriptions as the information used
in the ‘inputs’ is crucial.
Your Human Resources service will be constructing
a template job description to be used in the exercise.
When the discussions begin with post-holders –
and their managers -about filling in the sections
of the JD please contact the college based reps
and the branch office to ensure the data is agreed
and agreeable before it is submitted.
There are ongoing discussions/negotiations about
the evaluation model, the timescales of implementation,
the scrutiny and consistency element and the legal
implications of T.U.P.E versus equalities legislation.
As these discussions progress we will keep you all
informed.
