Respect public service workers, our city and the make poverty
history campaign, says Edinburgh UNISON

Edinburgh's council workers' union has called on G8 demonstrators
"to respect council staff who are keeping essential services going,
respect our city but most of all to respect the campaign to make
poverty history".
"Our members have done all in their power to welcome everyone
to Edinburgh but to cause trouble after the historic demonstration
on Saturday not only causes huge problems for our members delivering
services, it also betrays the 30,000 children who die every day
in Africa due to poverty", said John Stevenson, UNISON Edinburgh
Branch Secretary.
"Hundreds of organisations, including UNISON, joined together
to bring hundres of thousands to the Make Poverty History event.
Hundreds of our members have been cleaning the streets, erecting
safety barriers, staffing relief stations, looking after children
and protecting demonstrators. They will be doing that all through
the week.
"We are asking everyone to respect Edinburgh, to enjoy Live
8 and respect the public service workers who will be serving you.
Turn this week back to one that focuses on the 'Make Poverty History'
message and nothing else", added Mr Stevenson. ENDS
