UNISON Edinburgh Branch has welcomed commitments
revealed in the Labour and SNP coalition agreement
for Edinburgh Council.
"While there are areas where we need more
detail and would be seeking engagement with the
administration, we welcome their commitments on
a living wage, no compulsory redundancies and closer
consultation with staff and unions", said John
Stevenson Branch President.
The union particularly welcomes the agreement's
commitment to:-
1. a Living Wage of £7.20 for council staff
and their wish to encourage this in contractors
and subsidiaries
2. establish a policy of no compulsory redundancies
3. work in partnership with the unions
4. an apprentice programme
5. keep Lothian Buses public
"Despite the serious financial challenges the
council will face, these are the most positive commitments
we have seen from an incoming administration in
a very long time", added Mr Stevenson.
The branch is seeking an early meeting with the
council to discuss these and other commitments.
