Branch officers have been out and about at pay meetings
across many workplaces in the last couple of months. These
meetings have been really useful, not just for hearing
your views on pay, but also for hearing how we could do
things better. Three main issues have come up:-
Branch
officers in the workplace
Many members feel they only see branch officers when they
want something from them. The reality is that branch officers
have heavy workloads representing members and negotiating
on a host of procedures and agreements that often go unnoticed.
But that does not excuse us not keeping in touch. We
are looking at a range of ways to get branch officers
out into workplaces and we hope to start a series of 'drop
in surgeries' from September onwards, starting with Waverley
Court.
Communications
Website/Social Media: People want the
website updated more regularly with what is going on in
the branch. We try to update as much as possible but we
are now looking at better ways to get the information
on quicker.
We will continued to use the blog, facebook and twitter
to get urgent information out. You can follow us on twitter
at @unisonedin
Newsletter: We are committing to a monthly
newsletter where possible. Because of how long it takes
to turn round a newsletter for 8,000+ members, it is sometimes
not possible to report on fast changing issues and we
will use the web and social media for that. We also need
people prepared to distribute the newsletter in workplaces.
Representation
The key to better and quicker union representation is
more stewards! We are going all-out to try to get new
stewards and to find better ways of allocating work so
that you get the service when you need it.
Thanks for being a UNISON member and check back here
for updates on progress on these issues.
