Membership and Attendances
REPORT 2004
Membership up - but future challenges mean we need to recruit
even more
Yes, we're up in overall membership by 39 this year. Good news
but we need to build more than that if we are going to really
show our strength in the reorganisation challenges ahead.
Management are keen to tell us that not all council employees
are members. We need to be able to show them that the majority
are and we are building all the time. Our union is only as strong
as our membership so it is everyone's job to recruit.
Surveys continue to show that most non-members are only non-members
because no-one asked them to join. It is not rocket science,
you don't need a 'hard-sell'. In most cases it just means giving
someone a form!
Benefits and discounts
While representing members will always be the main role of
the union, members do get many other benefits. Discount on mortgages,
all types of insurance, holidays, legal and other services (click
here) are just some of the offers open to members. If you
know any company or service provider who may wish to consider
offering discount to union members please advise us at the Branch
Office.

Audit for proportionality and Fair Representation
Proportionality is slowly progressing with improvements at
Branch Officer and Branch Committee level and a really welcome
rise at Stewards level which should work through to the Branch
Committee at least.
Most Departments are trying hard but it is difficult in a
climate of an overall shortage of activists, male or female.
The manual and craft proportions are down but it reflects changes
in the status of some jobs. In the big manual & craft areas
(City Dev and Env & Cons) we are hitting and exceeding targets
and proportionality is holding or improving.
Figures are clouded if places are left vacant if there is no
woman and a two delegate dept meets proportionality by having
50%.

* Associated Bodies figure misreported last year.
Conditions breakdowns show the percentages where conditions
are known (ie in only 84% of cases).
There are members, especially in Associated and other bodies,
where the conditions category is not clear. There are still
members where gender is not recorded but this is reducing. Stewards
breakdown by conditions not available. Machinery not yet in
place to relieably identify shift workers, disabled, lesbian
or gay, black members. or part time and job share members.
