Why we are campaigning for
Edinburgh's Services
UNISON members care about Edinburgh's services.
They are the people who deliver those services,
and they see at first hand, how cuts affect
the people of Edinburgh.
That is why we have been at the centre of the
debate on how our services should be delivered
under a Scottish Parliament.
That is why we have campaigned year after year
to highlight the human cost of cuts and why
this year we have been at the centre of the
debate on the future of our services.
And we have saved services. This year our campaigns
saved hot school meals. They brought 1,000 redundancies
down to a handful - and still we are fighting
to save these jobs - because in local government,
a job lost is a service lost!
Local Government and the Voluntary Sector's
most valuable resource is their staff. Proper
training, job security and conditions are a
positive contribution to responsive and high
quality public services. These can best be provided
for by a directly employed team rather than
employees of a variety of private sector employers
and/or trusts with will have different aims,
objectives and vested interests.
UNISON says:-
+ We must give people
a say in their services.
Our services must be responsive to
our needs and wishes.
+ We must choose quality
services.
They must be the best that can be
delivered.
+ We must choose teamwork
to provide our public services.
Our services should be provided by
a workforce who are trained and qualified with
the means and support to deliver what people
need.
Only then will we be able to say that our public
services are Serving Scotland's Capital.
