Trade Union Safety Training TUC
Health and Safety Stage 1 and Next Steps for
Safety Reps are the standard accredited training
and all Safety Reps should undertake these.

You should get your name down
for the next Stage 1 course when you are appointed
as a Safety Representative.
It is recommended that you should
undertake Next Steps after about one year but
this is not prescriptive and you can undertake
it earlier or later according to your needs.
Safety Representatives have a
right to attend these courses that is covered
by the law and by also the City of Edinburgh
Council Trade Union agreement.
The Occupational Diploma is of
use to Safety Representatives who undertake
consultation with management at a higher level
than workplace. This course is also covered
by case law that protects the right to take
it where that would be reasonable.
The TUC also supply short courses.
Currently ones on Accident Investigation, Risk
Assessment and Control of Substances Harmful
to Health are among the ones that they run.
Please ensure that you apply for
the training that you require and that you report
any refusals of time to attend to the Branch
Health and Safety Officer c/o the Branch Office.
Course dates are shown for courses
at both Stevenson College and Falkirk CVS. Students
are expected to apply for courses for the course
that would place least strain on UNISON funds.
