Councilor Val Walker – A Tribute

It is with genuine sadness that the UNISON City of Edinburgh Branch received news of the passing of Councilor Val Walker. Val was that rare breed of politician who was always consistent in her values, making time for her colleagues and constituents and showing a warmth to all she met. The trust and respect she gave and earned was immeasurable and were some of the many reasons Val was held in such high regard.

Before being elected as a Councilor, Val worked for the City of Edinburgh Council in both education and the libraries. During this time, she was an active member of this branch and always spoke with pride about her work on behalf of UNISON members. Trade unionism continued to be very important to Val during her time as a Councilor, culminating in her holding the post of Chairperson of the Council’s Joint Consultative Committee, the highest forum for the Council’s trade unions to engage with the employer.

The Leader of the City of Edinburgh Council, Jane Meagher acknowledged this in her tribute to Councilor Walker when she stated, “She brought the same determination to her role as Chair of the Council’s Joint Consultative Committee and I know she was held in the highest regard by the Trade Unions, who recognised a lifetime of activism and support”. Val’s other great passions were for the theatre and the arts, and these too were acknowledged with the Council Leader recognizing Val as “a great champion of the festivals, and of the benefits they bring to our city’s reputation.” A truly remarkable woman.

Councilor Val Walker was a trusted friend and colleague and a democratically elected representative renowned for her honesty and integrity. UNISON City of Edinburgh Branch extends our deepest sympathy and condolences to Val’s family.
