The event opened powerfully with Isabella Ingibina, Edinburgh Branch Black Members’ Officer, reading Professor Laura Serrant’s evocative poem “You Called and We Came: Remembering Nurses of the Windrush Generation.”
Her reading honored the legacy and contributions of the Windrush nurses — setting an emotional and empowering tone for the day’s celebration of resilience, history, and pride.

Inspiring Speakers
The programme featured an exceptional line-up of speakers who shared powerful stories of identity, leadership, and perseverance:
- Simita Kumar, Leader of the SNP Group, opened the event with a heartfelt reflection on her journey in politics and the importance of inclusion, representation and perseverance in the council and leadership.
- Nareen Turnbull, Executive Director at the City of Edinburgh Council, shared her personal story of navigating professional spaces as a woman of colour, offering an inspiring message about breaking barriers and leading with authenticity.
- Rania Obead, Convener of Stand Up to Racism Edinburgh, delivered a powerful address on activism, solidarity, and the ongoing fight against racism, reminding all present that collective action remains key to meaningful change.
Cultural Celebration
The celebration came alive through music, fashion, and performance — a joyful showcase of African and Black cultural expression:
- The Voice of Restoration Choir delivered a soul-stirring performance that filled the room with harmony and hope.
- Favor Davidking, Steward and Chair of the Black Members’ SOG, led a stunning African Cultural Fashion Walk, celebrating heritage, identity, and artistry.
- The Kira African Drumming Group brought rhythm and energy, reminding everyone of the deep communal roots of African music

Interactive Q&A
The event also featured an engaging Q&A session chaired by Ian Ludlam, Chair of UNISON Edinburgh Branch, allowing attendees to connect directly with the speakers and explore key themes of leadership, resilience, and anti-racism.
