UNISON City of Edinburgh branch is writing to inform you about the results of the recent re-ballot regarding the trade dispute with COSLA over the 2024/25 pay offer for the SJC workforce, which closed at 10 am on 5 August 2024.
Despite our best efforts and extensive campaigning—including site visits, emails, phone calls, social media outreach, and text messages—we regret to inform you that we did not meet the required threshold of 50% of eligible voters participating in the re-ballot.
Due to restrictive anti-trade union legislation, we are not able to proceed with strike action in waste & cleansing at this time.
Despite these efforts, there was little more we could do to achieve the necessary turnout.
Upcoming Waste Action (14 and 22 August 2024):
During the upcoming waste action scheduled for 14 and 22 August in Scotland, UNISON members in waste will not be permitted to participate in the strike.
Guidance for Members:
- Work Attendance: The branch advises that members should go to work as usual.
- Picket Lines: If you do not wish to cross a picket line, please be aware that the council will not take disciplinary action against you. However, UNISON is not permitted to pay strike pay in these circumstances.
- Financial Hardship: If you are concerned about financial hardship due to these developments, we encourage you to contact the branch office to schedule an appointment with the welfare officer. They can provide more information on hardship applications and available support.
Continuing the Fight for Fair Pay:
While we are unable to take action in waste here in Edinburgh, UNISON members in 13 other councils will take action in waste. Additionally, we are currently balloting school & early years staff in Edinburgh as part of the ongoing pay dispute. Our fight for fair pay continues vigorously in these other areas for all council workers.
We understand that this situation is challenging and appreciate your understanding and solidarity during this time.
Thank you to those that did take the time to vote and support the campaign for council worker pay.
Please reach out if you have any questions or need further assistance.
