Annual General Meeting 2023 Preliminary Notice

We are pleased to invite you to the UNISON City of Edinburgh Branch 2023 Annual General Meeting (AGM). The AGM is open to all members, and we would be delighted if you could attend.

Where and When
Following the popularity of holding both physical and virtual events in 2022, we will be holding four Annual General Meetings in 2023.

You can attend the meetings in person or join us online via MS Teams. Members need only attend one of the meetings.

You can register for your preferred meeting date via one of the links above. Please ensure you include your full name and membership number and indicate if you plan to attend the meeting in person or via MS Teams. The MS Teams joining link will be sent to you nearer the meeting.

There is no requirement to contact us if you are unable to attend.

What is the AGM?
Every year, each branch of UNISON is required to hold an Annual General Meeting (AGM).

UNISON is a member-led democratic union, and the branch AGM is our system for deciding the priorities for the branch in the coming year. It’s a chance for members to come together, ask questions and share their thoughts on how the branch is working.

During the meeting you will hear about the branch’s activities in 2022, as well as to look at plans and the budget for 2023. Members will be asked to vote for officers to run the branch for the next year.

Why is it important to attend?
UNISON is a member-led union, which means that we need you to tell us what you would like to see from your branch.

You pay your UNISON subscriptions every month, so you should have a say in how they are being spent. We want to make sure that we are spending your subscriptions in a way that benefits all our members. Similarly, the meeting will look at how the branch intends to develop in the coming year. We want all our members to have a say in shaping this.

Electing your Branch Officials
One of the most important functions of the AGM is to elect officials to lead the branch for the year ahead. A full range of roles are available in the branch, and each one carries an important set of responsibilities. Whether you’re face to face with managers in negotiations, representing members in a disciplinary, or helping members with a welfare claim, all are necessary to create an effective union team.

All branch officers must be elected every year, and we are now inviting nominations for these positions. Please click here for a nomination form along with a brief description of the roles.

You can nominate yourself or other members for any of these roles, but each candidate must be nominated by two members of the branch. The deadline for nominations is Wednesday 4th January 2023.

If more than one nomination is received for a role, an election will be held where all members of the branch are invited to vote to select the preferred candidate. In the event of an election voting papers will be circulated in advance of the AGM, with the outcome announced at the AGM.

If you are interested in becoming a branch officer and would like to discuss this further, please contact the Branch Office by emailing branchoffice@unison-edinburgh.org.uk or calling 0131 558 7488.

Motions and Rule Changes
If you would like to submit a Motion for consideration or a change in the Branch Rules, please do so by Friday 6th January 2023 by emailing the terms of the motion to  branchoffice@unison-edinburgh.org.uk

Access Requirements
We recognise that to ensure all of our members can fully participate it may be necessary to make adjustments, if you require any adjustment please contact the branch by emailing branchoffice@unison-edinburgh.org.uk or calling 0131 558 7488 and we will discuss your requirements.

We hope you will be able to attend the AGM! I look forward to seeing you there.
