Glasgow’s launch of the UNISON Year of the Black Workers was held in Glasgow City Chambers on Thursday 1st June 2023, hosted by Cllr. Dr Soryia Siddique and presented by Kash Tannk, Scottish Black Members Committee (SBMC).
The well-attended event heard speeches from Raza Sadiq, Chair SBMC, Kay McKerrell, Secretary SBMC, Zamard Zahid, Anti-Racist Campaigner, Paul Reddish, Volunteering Matters, Kaukab Stewart, MSP, Rohit Rao, PHD Researcher and Dr. Chinny Ireogbu, Vice Chair SBMC.
Discussion points varied from calling out workplace abuse, institutional racism within Police Scotland and Scottish Cricket, branch commitments to YOTBW, the need for more diverse representation within the workplace and politics, the importance of race education and the role trade unions have had in supporting the Sheku Bayoh’s family during the ongoing public enquiry.
Ian Mullen, Branch Education Officer said: I was privileged to be invited to the event by the Black Workers Committee, our branch is committed to supporting UNISONS Year of the Black Workers and we are sure it will be as successful as last year’s Year of the Disabled Worker.
