Year of the Black Workers Stall – 12th July 2023

Our branch continues to support the UNISON Year of the Black Workers (YOTBW) campaign when we held the first of what we hope will be many campaign stalls starting in Waverley Court on Wednesday 12 July 2023, visiting other locations throughout the rest of the year.

At February’s Scottish Council Conference, our branch made six commitments to the campaign, which we are currently working through. This included calling out all forms of discrimination, identifying areas of concern, and equality and challenging racism training for all branch representatives.

Amongst the reps staffing the stall was Isabella Ebiye Ingibina, our new Black Members Branch Officer and Zia Hussain, Scottish Black Members Committee member. My thanks to all the officers who assisted on the day and to our colleagues who took time out of their lunch period to talk to us and take campaign materials away. You can find the latest updated YOTBW campaign information here: https://www.unison.org.uk/about/what-we-do/fairness-equality/black-members/

Ian Mullen, branch education Officer said “It was great to see so much support for our campaign stall, promoting equality, inclusivity, and diversity for all workers and we will continue to work with our employer on these important issues. There is no place for discrimination of any kind in today’s society.”
