Edinburgh Labour Group has agreed to fully support the party’s Local Government Committee motion, moved by Val Walker and Kyle Bellamy (UNISON Delegates).
Cammy Day – Edinburgh Labour Group Leader – said: “We met with the unions on Monday 30th August to reinforce our commitment to delivering the motion and to re-affirm our rejection of the current proposals. We also called for the EIJB to enter meaningful negotiations with trade unions and with residents and their families.
“We also agreed to meet with Trade Union representatives on a regularly basis to discuss the issues involved in providing care for the elderly as well as protecting the care home service within an overall Care for the Elderly plan.
“In taking the action outlined in the motion forward we have – through Cllr Ricky Henderson – managed to get the unanimous support at the EIJB not to take a decision on the present proposals until a comprehensive consultation undertaken. The timescale and the scale of the consultation will be agreed at the next IGB board meeting.
“In order to promote the Labour Groups position on the proposed closures we will agree to post regular updates on the Edinburgh Labour Facebook page as well as seek to get as much news coverage as possible.”
